Connecticut lawmakers are considering making it illegal to attach weapons to drones.
Two bills regarding weaponizing drones are sitting in committee, but each contains this paragraph:
“Except as otherwise provided by law, no person shall operate or use any computer software or other technology, including, but not limited to, an unmanned aerial vehicle… that allows a person, when not physically present, to release tear gas or any like or similar deleterious agent or to remotely control a deadly weapon … or an explosive or incendiary device.”
Additionally, the bill makes weaponizing drones a felony.
The idea of arming drones was somewhat shockingly put in the minds of Connecticut lawmakers and federal authorities last summer, when drone enthusiast Austin Haughwout published a video of a gun-toting drone to his YouTube channel. In addition to state lawmakers, the video also got the attention of the Federal Aviation Administration, whose investigation into whether the drone broke any air safety laws is still going.
However, not everyone is a fan of the weaponized drone bills. During a hearing on the bills before the Connecticut general assembly, Farmington police chief Paul Melanson, speaking on behalf of the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association, said law enforcement agencies should be allowed to use weaponized drones.
When the committees will rule on the bills is not known.
