On Friday, Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge went on sale worldwide. The phones were already selling like hotcakes even before the official release date, and now millions of additional people are going to be buying this week and beyond. Fueling the large number of sales so early is the lack of competition at the moment. There’s no other new phone on the market with distribution equaling the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. The LG G5 won’t be ready until next month and the HTC 10 hasn’t even been announced yet. Samsung is offering what is perhaps the best option in most regions around the world.
Apple, however, could be the one company to slow down Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge sales. But Samsung seems ready. Both companies are working on smaller variants of their flagships to serve consumers wanting a smaller phone.
The team in Cupertino led by Tim Cook is planning to launch the iPhone SE on March 21. Apple intends to keep this model only lesser in terms of size. Many features people know and love about the iPhone 6S will remain. The iPhone SE is expected to have a 4-inch display, Apple A9 processor, 12MP camera with Live Photos, NFC, and Touch ID. It’ll basically be similar to one of the older iPhone models but with modern-day technology. Since there’s a lot going on in such a compact body, I wouldn’t be surprised if temperature and battery life became a concern for owners of the iPhone SE. It’s a lot easier to build a bigger phone than a smaller one to keep everyone running smoothly.
Going after Apple and the iPhone SE will be Samsung with its Galaxy S7 Mini. A rumor out of Taiwan states that Samsung is preparing a smaller variant of the Galaxy S7 to prevent consumers from considering the iPhone SE because Samsung doesn’t have a small-yet-strong phone. The alleged phone will have a 4.6-inch 720p display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or Samsung Exynos 8890 processor inside. Either processor can be found within the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge in different regions. Samsung plans to pair it with 3GB of RAM, and the camera on the rear is said to be 12MP with 3X optical zoom. Ultimately, the Galaxy S7 Mini could come in a body measuring 9.9mm thick.
What we know for sure is that neither Samsung nor Apple has confirmed the existence of these smaller phones. We’ll just have to wait and see what both companies decide to do in the coming weeks and months.
