Samsung’s virtual reality platform led by the Gear VR is getting one of the most popular titles in the history of gaming. In 2016, Minecraft will be playable on the Gear VR.
Oculus, who forged a partnership with Samsung in August 2014 to work on virtual reality for mobile devices, hosted an invite-only event at GDC 2016 today where the company showcased Minecraft on the Rift and Gear VR.
Although a release date was not provided, it’s expected that the game will arrive in virtual reality form by the end of the first half of the year. Microsoft is now the owner of Minecraft developer Mojang; therefore, the resources necessary to push the game out for Rift and Gear VR owners are present. Also, Oculus presumably wants Minecraft to be available to people buying the Rift when the virtual reality headset goes on sale on March 28. It’s just unclear if the game would make it to the Gear VR at the same time. Given that Facebook owns Oculus and Mark Zuckerberg has a good relationship with Samsung, Minecraft being released for the Gear VR alongside the Rift version may not be so improbable.
