With social media companies such as Twitter and Facebook boasting their own live streaming apps in the form of Periscope and Facebook Live, and Snapchat boasting 8 billion videos viewed, it seems that Google also wants a piece of the action. The search giant is reportedly developing an app called YouTube Connect to take on its competitor’s offerings, as well as bolster its YouTube service.
According to VentureBeat, YouTube Connect will allow users to begin streaming from the app, with video able to be viewed live from both within the app and the various YouTube channels. It will also be possible to store the broadcast, which means you can view the replay and critique the result.
“There are chat and tagging features, and a ‘news feed’ that features the latest clips from your friends or those that you’ve subscribed to on YouTube.”
Live video broadcasting appears to be a subject that Google is paying close attention to recently with the ability to livestream online gaming via its YouTube Gaming app. If you are familiar with the Creator Studio on YouTube, you have probably seen that there is livestreaming functionality present, but it isn’t terribly easy user-friendly. Google will be hoping that the YouTube Connect app will prove more accessible to a wider audience.
As you might expect, YouTube Connect will be available for both Android and iOS users. Although it isn’t known when the livestreaming app will launch, Google’s I/O developer conference in May is a possibility.
What do you think? Would you use the livestreaming capability of YouTube Connect over Periscope for example?
