DVD rental group Redbox is getting ready to take on the video-streaming giants with Redbox Digital, a source speaking to Variety has revealed.
An exclusive report from Variety explains that multiple sources have mentioned the planned move, also sharing a series of screenshots of the service in action and a new logo.
Redbox Digital will supposedly take the form of a buying and renting service, allowing customers to watch TV shows and movies across multiple platforms such as PCs and mobile devices. To add to that, Redbox is said to be integrating its existing loyalty program into the new ‘video-on-demand store’.
Speaking to Variety in light of the rumors, a Redbox spokesperson has said:
“Redbox continually looks for ways to enhance our customer experience. For tens of millions of consumers, Redbox is their source for new release rentals without a subscription. As such, we regularly conduct tests of potential new offerings, that may or may not be brought to market, as part of our ongoing commitment to provide additional value.”
Back in the day, Redbox’s first attempt at conquering the world of online video with Redbox Instant didn’t go so well, primarily due to a general lack of interest from consumers. Limited content compared to competitors including Netflix and Amazon didn’t help, either. This time around, the DVD group will be hoping it has the power to turn some heads.
Just recently, we reported on the news that Redbox Instant is set to close on October 7, shutting down less than two years after it was started up through a partnership involving Redbox and Verizon.
