As smartphone markets become more mature around the world, even in places like China that lagged for a while, manufacturers are looking for new places to apply their technological know-how to continue to generate profits. One area that is ripe for growth is in home automation, which is why Xiaomi is ready to jump on that bandwagon with their new Mi Ecosystem sub-brand. Leading things off is an interesting choice, a pressure rice cooker.
The new Mi Induction Heating Pressure Rice Cooker was announced today. As part of the release, one of the co-inventors of the device, Naito Takeshi, said he hopes to “make a better rice cooker” with the launch of the device. To make that happen, Xiaomi opted to use a pressure cooker design to hep push the temperature up and help preserve the benefits of foods cooked in the device. A cast iron inner pot is used to help heat rice evenly and Xiaomi opted to use Daikin Neoflon to create a non-stick surface.
Adding brains to the device means controls are present so the device will cook rice just right based on the type of rice, the brand, the origin and even how one prefers their rice cooked. All of these variables means Xiaomi had to build a database that contains information on rice from over 200 brands covering 2,450 cooking method combinations. To speed up entry of all this data for users, a smartphone app was developed that can be used to scan a barcode off of the rice packaging.
The new rice cooker will be joined later by other devices coming out of Xiaomi’s new Mi Ecosystem line. The suggested retail price is 999 yuan (≈$150 USD) and the device is scheduled to be available starting on April 6th, but for now it appears it will be a Chinese market exclusive.
