Tidal in a press release yesterday announced that the music streaming service now has a whopping 3 million users.

A little under half of those users, 1.35 million, are actually paying for Tidal’s Hi-Fi subscription. Tidal also isn’t factoring free trials into these numbers.

As you might’ve guessed, Tidal has exceeded many expectations, which is largely because of how successful the music streaming service’s exclusives have had. Tidal was able to obtain exclusive rights to albums from popular singers like Rihanna, Beyonce, and most recently, Kanye West. The exclusive streaming rights to these albums aren’t very surprising, though. After all, all three singers do have a stake in the company.

Beyond thriving off of these exclusives, other areas of Tidal has grown as well. For instance, Tidal now has a library of a whopping 40 million songs. The company has also added Lil Wayne, TIP, Indochine, and Damian Marley to the ownership group.

While the company is seeing some success, it’s still facing a lot of challenges both in court and in the public eye. There’s no telling how long Tidal will last, or even if the music streaming service will continue to see this success.

While Tidal might have 3 million subscribers, it’d be interesting to see a further breakdown in statistics, such as how many subscribers drop after getting bored of Kanye’s new album, which was streamed 250 million times in the first 10 days of its launch.

One thing’s for sure: Tidal’s bleak future isn’t looking so bleak anymore. And it may just be able to get itself a firm footing in the music streaming industry.
