When the company announced the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge at MWC 2016 in February, Samsung included a special bonus where anyone who pre-ordered either device would receive a free virtual reality headset. Including the Gear VR at no extra cost proved to be a smart move as Samsung experienced better-than-expected demand prior to the March 11 release date.
It actually turns out that so many people pre-ordered the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge and forced Samsung to push back the delivery times for free virtual reality headsets. Samsung just doesn’t have enough Gear VR units on its hands to ship to everyone who submitted a claim and was approved.
On Friday, Samsung sent out emails to another wave of eager customers (including myself) expecting to get a free Gear VR in the mail by the end of April. But the virtual reality headsets won’t be arriving for at least another month because of “high level of interest” in the promotion. The email says delivery times have been extended into May while June, July, and August are not off the table. There are that many people who pre-ordered Samsung’s flagship and jumped.
If you’re impatient and don’t want to wait any longer, Samsung has an alternative: give up your place in line and get a $100 credit to use on Samsung’s site. Just go to the promotion’s status page, enter your email, and you can switch from receiving a free Gear VR in weeks or months to immediately getting a $100 credit. Samsung is requiring that your decision is made by April 8, and the $100 credit is only value through July 1.
