With Netflix, Hulu Plus, and a host of other streaming services offering monthly subscriptions, it isn’t really a surprise that Amazon has chosen to offer its Prime Video as a standalone service with a monthly fee. Instead of being bundled up as part of Amazon Prime‘s one-off payment of $99, you can now choose to subscribe only to Prime Video for $8.99 a month.

As you might expect, if you choose to subscribe to Prime Video, you will only be able to access Prime Video content, none of the other Amazon Prime benefits are included. At $8.99 a month, it isn’t really a bargain.

For a one-off payment of $99, you can get Prime Video included as part of the Amazon Prime package that includes free 2-day shipping (or even same-day shipping if you live in an eligible area), unlimited music streaming, access to more than a million e-books, and early access to Lightning Deals for a 12-month period. The standalone Prime Video subscription, on the other hand, will cost you $107.88 for the year. It really isn’t the smart choice if you are an Amazon Prime subscriber. For just two bucks extra a month, you can subscribe to the full Amazon Prime service with all of its bells and whistles for $10.99 monthly.

So, we’ve ascertained that the monthly Prime Video subscription isn’t great value for people who are already Amazon Prime subscribers, but who exactly is it aimed at? With the inclusion of Ultra HD content and a cheaper monthly payment, the $8.99 monthly Prime Video option is aimed at the Netflix crowd who would like to save a buck or two.

What do you make of the Prime Video monthly subscription, is $8.99 a fair price? Would it tempt you over from Netflix? Let us know in the comments.
