In previous weeks, we’ve seen Sony push the Marshmallow update to its Xperia Z5 and Z3 range of devices, as well as the Z4 Tablet. One device that was missing from the list, though, was the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact that was still laboring away on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Until today, that is, because the Marshmallow update is now available.
While the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update will be hitting both the cellular (SGP621/SGP641) and WiFi (SGP611/SGP612) variants of the Xperia Z3 Table Compact via OTA, it is rolling out in stages. This means it could be a few days at least before your device notifies you that an update is available. If you are impatient like me, though, you can always connect your Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact up to your computer and install the Sony PC Companion software that will notify you that the update is available (as seen in the image above). The software will then guide you through the process of updating your device.
Sony’s PC Companion software really is easy to use, and after its downloaded the new firmware with build number 23.5.A.0.570, it then transfers it to your tablet. Once done, you’ll be asked to disconnect the tablet from the computer before powering the device on. When booted up, the tablet will install the firmware automatically, spending a bit of time upgrading the various Android apps before showing the lock-screen which means it’s finished with the update process. After that, you will have Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow running on your Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
The Android 6.0.1 firmware includes enhanced privacy settings, a new camera interface, the new Marshmallow battery saving Doze and App Standby features, Xperia Messaging, as well as Direct Share that allows you to share activity with friends, recent contacts, and app lists. Let us know in the comments how you get on with the new firmware.
