With wearable tech taking off, a number of companies are experimenting with the possibilities behind it. A group of students in New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) have created what they’re called the “Smart Hoodie”, which responds to different gestures.

A GSM radio is essentially sewn into the sweatshirt, and the demonstrators of the device show three different gestures – touching the hood, touching a sleeve, and rolling up a sleeve. Each of these gestures sends a text message to a pre-programmed contact.

The demo of the device focused primarily on staying in contact with family members, but it could be used for other purposes, like sending a text to 911. Questions like washing the hoodie and removing the electronics have yet to be answered, but as a prototype this certainly is a cool concept!
