Guest Jeff Causey Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 According to sources, Google is planning to announce a new health data service at Google I/O to collect data from several sources using a set of open APIs. It is not clear whether Google will release this as a standalone app or whether it will become a part of the Android codebase. This new move by Google comes on the heels of Apple’s announcement of a new Healthkit framework to be released with iOS 8 and Samsung’s Sami platform, both of which perform similar functions. The idea behind the Google service, along with the others, is to provide a centralized datasource for users who may be using more than one wearable device or using several different apps to collect health data. The new platform will aggregate this data helping users make more sense of it all. A big hurdle in the past has been reluctance on the part of users to have health data stored or accessed by companies like Google. Google tried something like this in the past with Google Health, but shut it down in 2012. With changes in privacy concerns, the challenge could be even tougher now. Google and other companies will also have to walk a fine line to not run afoul of the FDA by offering diagnosis information. source: Forbes Come comment on this article: Google to jump in fitness data pool Visit TalkAndroid for Android news, Android guides, and much more!
