Cell phone users are all too familiar with the impact being inside a building, like their own home, has on their ability to get service. This was true with the 3G networks when cellular providers would deploy femto cells to try to address holes in coverage. The problem is no less true for the new 4G LTE networks being deployed. To help combat this latest version of the problem, Qualcomm has introduced the FSM90xx low-cost chip.

Qualcomm believes that by using this new chip, device makers could include them in cheap consumer grade WiFi access points. Wireless operators could effectively deploy mini 4G LTE cells that cover an individual home and not much else. For users, that is typically all that is needed to cover an annoying weak point in cell provider networks.

According to Qualcomm Atheros product manager Puneet Sethi, the new chip is “designed to help wireless operators fill coverage holes. One of the big differences is that it delivers this functionality in a form factor and with performance characteristics that are suitable for inclusion in a residential gateway.” One of those characteristics that Qualcomm had to address was getting 4G LTE technology to work next to WiFi technology without creating interference issues.
