Guest Jeff Causey Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Earlier today Google took the wraps off their new Android Auto platform to bring Android to the automobile. They indicated they expect the new system to be available in autos on the market before the end of the year. While they have not committed to getting something out to consumers quite that fast, Audi has issued a press release indicating that starting in 2015 “all-new” models that are equipped with Audi’s MMI system will be Android Auto ready. You may note the careful use of wording and inclusion of the hyphen in describing “all-new” models. This seems to suggest Audi will start to include the system in either entirely new models added to their line or to models that undergo a significant refresh to a new generation as opposed to being in all “new” models. It is unclear whether Audi will even make an attempt to retrofit Android Auto to work with existing models like the recently reintroduced Audi TT. If Google’s new offering takes off though, they may move to deploy it across a wider swath of their model line at a faster pace. As far as other German auto manufacturers, only Audi’s parent company VW appears to be amenable to incorporating an Android solution for users that want their smartphones to work with their vehicles as extensively as possible. BMW and Mercedes have not signed on with the Open Automotive Alliance. source: Android Police Come comment on this article: Audi announces intention to deploy Android Auto Visit TalkAndroid for Android news, Android guides, and much more!
