Guest Jeff Causey Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/1cdaf7a3a50d9af1551563267230717c.png Although there are options already in existence to run Android on desktops, both natively and within emulators, a new kickstarter project for Console OS promises to bring a native build of Android for the desktop to market that will be easy enough for everyday users to run. If successful, the Console OS team believes this option will be popular in helping consumers tap into the apps they use on their smartphones and tablets while working on their computers. According to Console OS, their solution has been built from the ground up to enable fast switching between Windows and Android operating systems. It will also support multi-touch and non-touch displays. Console OS will be capable of running from an internal hard drive or users can run it from a USB external hard drive. The development team also says Console OS will have full support for Android 4.4 KitKat. Console OS will be a free option when finally released, however a paid subscription will give users access to features like “InstaSwitch” so operating systems can be swapped without a reboot along with native DVR support. The other issue will be support for particular hardware as a separate version of Console OS will have to be built for each specific device. This is where Kickstarter support may be appealing to some as it gives you a voice in which devices get support. According to the Console OS team, their version of Android for the desktop will be available before the end of 2014. Update: According to Console OS, their pricing model is not a subscription model. Instead, users can buy an upgrade to Console OS Pro for $19.99. The plan is to release at least one major update each year which will cost an additional $19.99, although users will not be required to update. As part of the Kickstarter campaign, if you get in early you can buy the upgrade for only $10 and will have access to upgrades for no additional charge for life.
