Guest James Gray Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/5cf1d1e92421db0f40eb7da9533f4f24.jpg Google has toyed with the idea of high-tech contact lenses for quite some time, even partnering with pharmaceutical giant Novartis to bring their vision of the future (pun intended) to market. While they’ve hinted at features like embedded cameras and glucose monitors, two patents filed by the tech giant yesterday seem to be aimed more at security. Using capacitive sensors that make sure it’s being worn on an actual eye, the lens would use a three step process to essentially turn your eye into a fingerprint. While similar technologies like fingerprint scanners and facial detection already exist, the process used by the contact lens offers a level of security that has never before been available to the public. It works as follows: Light is received on the eye’s iris Detecting, at one or more light sensors disposed on or within a transparent lens covering at least a portion of the eye, light reflected from the light incident on the iris of the eye, wherein the light reflected comprises image data indicative of a pattern associated with the iris. Outputting an iris fingerprint based in part on the image data http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/efa9527945aefdef51a7ea356c60e94c.png The genius behind this is that it simplifies the iris into a predictable set of data, similar to a barcode or a QR code that is unique to your eye and therefore useless in the hands (or on the eye) of an impostor. That brings us back to the capacitive sensors I mentioned earlier. Those are covered in the aptly titled, “facilitation of contact lenses with capacitive sensors”. These sensors measure the moisture on the surface of the eye and the thickness of the eyelid and could theoretically measure your blinking and the amount of moisture on your eyes. Obviously this early on, Google’s full intentions and ambitions can only be guessed, but privacy concerns aside (do we really want a corporation to literally be in our heads?) there is no denying that this is some seriously cool technology with the potential to do things we can only imagine. Sound off in the comments with your thoughts and concerns on Google’s futuristic new technology.
