Guest Jeff Causey Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/da1a86170cd1b1aac67f29ab621b0135.jpg It should be no surprise to anyone now that Samsung, despite being on the top of the smartphone hill, finds itself slipping as competitors struggle to knock them off. We already know Samsung’s Q2 profits slipped, marking the first year-over-year slide in almost three years. During an earnings call to discuss the financial results, Kim Hyun-Joon, a senior vice president with the company, shared a little bit about what Samsung plans to do to try to regain the confidence of investors and re-assert itself. Kim indicated that in the immediate future, that is within the next six months, Samsung plans to release two new high-end phones. Although he did not mention any names, one of them will have a large screen and is surely a reference to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, part of the Note line that normally gets released in the fall months. The other is a device that will be manufactured with “new materials.” That reference could be to the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy Alpha, although that device hardly seems to qualify as a “high end” smartphone. Kim could also be hinting at something with a flexible display, like some of the Youm display devices that have been rumored. Kim also said that Samsung continues to work on new low- and mid-range phone models and we could possibly see some more enhanced features start to push down into those devices. Samsung admitted during the call that it had overestimated demand for smartphones, leading to some high inventories. The impact of currency exchange rates also had a negative impact on Samsung’s financial results. They are also being buffeted by competition in markets like China where other manufacturers are able to squeeze prices on the back of volume. Kim suggested that part of the key to the Chinese market will be a focus on larger-screen devices and trimming the number of models offered. source: Wall Street Journal Come comment on this article: Samsung talks strategy to address financial slide Visit TalkAndroid for Android news, Android guides, and much more! http://androidforum.us/data/MetaMirrorCache/fe7783ac068635180de417959bae8d0c._.gif News via TalkAndroid
