LG pushing update to G Watch to fix charging pin residue issue

In the past few weeks, owners of the LG G Watch have complained about residue buildup on the charging pins. Of course the issue is only appearing on just a minority of the units, but it’s an issue that LG is responsible for fixing nonetheless.

LG has responded swiftly, and is now pushing out a software update (the build number has moved from KMV78V to KMV78Y) to disable the current in the charging pins while the watch is not in the charging dock.

Here’s what LG had to say about the issue.

Recently it has come to our attention that a small number of G Watch devices have been reported to have developed discoloration and residue buildup on the terminal pins located on the back. While completely safe and unlikely to affect charging, LG will be rolling out a maintenance release over the next few days that will disable the current when the G Watch is not in the charging dock. The maintenance release will be rolled out automatically over-the-air to all G Watch owners. We thank G Watch users for their patience and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

The fix should get rid of the risk of burns/discomfort, but corrosion is still possible if any salt accumulates on the contacts while the G Watch charges.

We’re not aware of any other changes in the recent software update, so we’ll let you know if we find anything else. The OTA update is in the process of rolling out, so be patient if you haven’t been prompted to download the new software yet.
