While several manufacturers have released their second round of smartwatches this past summer, Sony’s entry in the market, the Sony SmartWatch 2, was released almost a year ago. It should be no surprise then that Sony may be ready to reveal the next version of their wearable device, the SmartWatch 3, supposedly during IFA 2014.

Japanese site Digi-Wo is reporting on some features that will supposedly be present in the SmartWatch 3. First, they indicate screen is getting a resolution upgrade, but will still be the same transreflective screen used in the SmartWatch 2. This technology is used to minimize power demands and it offers better visibility in direct sunlight. The second item of note is that Sony has apparently decided not to implement Android Wear for the operating system. Instead, they will use their own operating system.

Digi-Wo is also reporting the device will have a Wi-Fi antenna built-in so it can function without necessarily being mated to a smartphone. The SmartWatch 3 will also support wireless charging and will receive the dust- and water-proof treatment.
