It's a huge investment and it's obviously worth it, since there's no other device that you spend so much time with. Then... you drop it and smash the screen. Even if you have AppleCare+, which costs $130 to begin with, replacing the screen with Apple is still going to cost you another $80. That's $210 on top of what you already spent just because your phone slipped as you took it out of your pocket.
