According to Wikipedia, the oldest reference to a collapsible umbrella dates all the way back to the year 21 AD. Plenty of progress has obviously been made since then, but things slowed down again a few decades ago when someone came up with an umbrella that opens and closes with the push of a button. That's certainly a useful feature, but the design of the umbrella itself has gone largely unchanged for far too long... until now.
