At launch, the game would freeze and crash constantly, and even when the app did work, there was a good chance the servers would be offline. Thankfully, many of those problem have been resolved through updates, but like any online game, Pokemon Go is going to continue to run into occasional speed bumps going forward. That's why it might not be a bad idea to know the status of the server at all times if you plan to play regularly.
