Android build numbers generally start with the same letter as the name of the current version of Android. For example, the latest build of KitKat is KOT49H (technically KVT49L for only the Nexus 7 LTE). However a couple of builds are appearing that start with the letter “A” as in ACU50C and ACU56E. This information comes from the idea133-weekly-release, which is for developers.

At this point, you would expect the next version of Android to start with the letter “L” since they have been going in order since Cupcake. Is Google planning something different? We’re not really sure, but here is how the build numbers break out.

As already stated, the first letter is for the codename of the Android release (“J” for Jelly Bean and “K” for KitKat). The second letter is a way for Google to identify the exact code branch the build was made from. The next letter and two digits refer to the date code. The letter is for the quarter starting with A as Q1 2009, so B would be Q2 2009, and so on. The two digits represent the days in the quarter, so B40 would be May 10, 2009. Last but not least, the last letter identifies different versions related to the same date code, and in sequential order.

In looking at ACU56C or ACU56E, again we are not sure what the “A” represents. The “C” represents the branch the code was made from. The U represents Q1 2014, and 56 represents the 56th day of Q1, which is February 25th. The last letter of either “C” or “E” represents the 3rd and 5th build for the day. So these are obviously current builds.

Google has only used the letters C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, and K for the first letter of builds since Android versions in order have been: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, and KitKat.

Anybody have any ideas as to what might be going on?
