Guest Jeff Causey Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 A new report from DigiTimes appears to strengthen the rumors that Google has turned to HTC as a partner in development of their next tablet device in the Nexus line. Previous reports suggested Google was working on a successor to the 10-inch Nexus tablet to be released some time in the third quarter of 2014. This latest report suggests that changes in the manufacturing partner are only the tip of the iceberg with Google possibly scaling down the size of the device which could be their last tablet. The latest report suggests Google has partnered with HTC to produce an 8-inch tablet slated for released in the third quarter. The choice of HTC is a bit odd given HTC’s lack of presence in the tablet market, although it would not be the first time Google and HTC have partnered on a Nexus device. The last two versions of the Nexus 7 were produced by Asustek. However, sales have not been as robust as either company would have hoped and it appears Asustek is ready to tackle the market on their own without restrictions from Google. In an interesting twist to the story, it is also suggested that whatever tablet is released by Google later this year, it will be the company’s last foray into the tablet market. This could make an HTC produced Nexus tablet a rarity, much like the only other tablet HTC ever produced, the HTC Flyer. Sources indicate Google’s Nexus tablets have not had a significant influence on the market which is the basis for Google’s decision to not pursue future models beyond this one. Considering the work Google is doing on other form factors like Google Glass, the Android Wear platform, and even Project Ara, it may not be a bad move to get out of a tablet market that is hotly contested by other large manufacturers. source: DigiTimes Come comment on this article: HTC reportedly tapped for 8-inch Google Nexus tablet Visit TalkAndroid for Android news, Android guides, and much more!
