A new report from CompareMyMobile, a phone recycling website, shows that over 40% of the people trading in smartphones with intentions of buying the new HTC One (M8) were upgrading from an Apple or Samsung device. Specifically, almost a quarter of these individuals, 23.74%, were moving from an Apple device to the HTC One (M8) while another 21.29% were coming from Samsung devices. HTC is also enjoying significant loyalty from owners of their older devices as 46.8% of the trade-ins came from that group of consumers who are trading up.

Ashley Turner, a co-founder of the site, said:

“It was amazing to see that over 40% of the HTC One M8 owners had upgraded from an Apple or Samsung device. Data we collected over a month through the comparemymobile.com phone recycling checkout suggests a much bigger churn of brands than we would have estimated.”

While it is good news for HTC to see that their consumer base is staying with them as they invest in new hardware, they have to be happy to see they are attracting buyers from the major players. We still won’t know for a while whether the HTC One (M8) is going to be enough to turn around HTC’s financial direction and sales could still be missing the target even if they are pulling in buyers from competitors.
