OnePlus has issued a statement regarding the news that broke yesterday suggesting OnePlus was owned by Oppo. The statement was meant to help clear things up, but depending on how concerned someone is with clarity about the situation, it may just serve to muddy the waters. According to OnePlus:

“…OnePlus is a separately run company that does share common investors with OPPO. One of those investors is OPPO Electronic. OPPO Electronic is an investment company and is not the same as OPPO Mobile. OnePlus is also in talks with other investors.”

OnePlus seems to be making the point that the Oppo listed in the SIPO documents is not the same Oppo that produces competing electronic devices. The investor in OnePlus is also an investor in Oppo Mobile meaning Oppo Electronics is funding two competing companies. This seems to raise some new questions though. For instance, is the common name “Oppo” shared between the investment group and the phone manufacturer just a coincidence or do they share a name because they are related entities? Another question seems to be swirling as to the accuracy of Peter Lau’s statements with regard to the ownership of OnePlus with some suggesting he never denied any relationship with Oppo despite the conventional wisdom suggesting he did.

Do you think the relationship between OnePlus and Oppo is a problem if the two are somehow related?
