Guest Christian de Looper Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 According to the jury foreman in the Apple-Samsung trial, the introduction of Google into the trial has raised questions about Apple’s true motivations. The trial ended with Apple being awarded $119.6 million due to Samsung infringing in 3 patents. Despite having to pay Apple, this was considered a victory for Samsung, mostly because this number was far less than the $2.2 billion that Apple was seeking. Not only that, but the jury also found that Apple infringed on one of Samsung‘s patents, and Samsung was awarded $158,400. Mr. Tom Dunham, the jury foreman and an ex-IBM software executive, said that the jury was curious about how Google may have affected Apple’s motivation in the case. While Apple hasn’t sued Google directly, they have sued a number of phone manufacturers that use Google’s Android. The suggestion is that Apple’s real target is Google. This point is supported by the fact that Samsung provided evidence of an email sent by former Apple CEO Steve Jobs saying that Apple should wage a “holy war” on Google. Furthermore, Google provided legal protection to Samsung for two of the five patents that were involved. Despite this, the jury found that Samsung did not infringe on either patent.
