However, the company isn’t just sticking to thermostats and smoke detectors as CEO Tony Fadell, a former iPod executive, says that it’s exploring a variety of other areas as well.

In an interview at the Code Conference, Fadell mentioned that the company was looking into various things associated with the home including security and health. As he said in the interview:

“I think there are a lot of unloved categories in the home. Like Elon [Musk] has done with Tesla, you can go in and rethink how you re-do electric motors in those products.”

Fadell avoided specifics when the audience asked him about specific applications such as high-tech toilets, automated health features for seniors or even water-conservation products, by telling the audience that they are “very interesting.” Although, he did put emphasis on the software aspect of the experience.

“Just like your smartphone has many many apps on it, we think there [could be] many apps in your home but you don’t necessarily need new hardware,” he said.

Fadell also touched upon the acquisition by Google and that while the company was a part of the search giant now, it still had its own separate plans. Even so, they’re in communications with Google.

“Of course we talk,” he said. “But it’s only been 14 weeks. We meet on a regular basis, every eight to 10 weeks, so we’ve only had one so far. And I meet with Larry, and then we talk with various members of Google about things that we might be able to put into our products.”

When asked about data collection from Google, Fadell said that there wasn’t a “commingling of data,” and that they were still their own separate brand. He also never mentioned anything about if the companies sharing resources at some point in the future or if the company would remain a “separate” entity in the way that Motorola did.
