Google will invest over 1 billion dollars into satellites that spread internet access

As we’ve seen with

Google’s Project Loon, the search giant is willing to throw money at strange flying objects to get more people connected to the internet. The latest project is going to be a bit more advanced than internet-dispensing balloons, however; this time, Google is using satellites.

 

Google is planning on dumping $1 billion into a fleet of 180 small satellites that will orbit the earth, connecting tons of people to the internet. This works pretty similarly to Project Loon, but the low altitude satellites will be able to reach many more people than a hot air balloon. According to sources close to the project, however, the cost of this project could rise to about $3 billion.

 

From Google’s point of view, the more people that are using the internet, the more potential “customers” they have. At the end of the day, it’s all about making money for Google, but at least it has the added benefit of bringing free internet access to underserved areas of the world.
